Recover a representative draft before the deadline
A backup is not proven until HR can restore a representative protected review into an isolated location, authenticate, verify the version and remove test residue. Account password reset may not decrypt an archive created with a different forgotten secret.
Before calibration week, HR restores a test review from separately stored backup media, opens it with documented recovery material, compares its version and checksum, then cleans the isolated test area and records corrective actions.
Run the control in five steps
- 01Select a representative protected draft and backup.
- 02Restore into an isolated location without overwriting active reviews.
- 03Authenticate using approved retained recovery material.
- 04Verify version, integrity and representative document behavior.
- 05Clean the test area and close all findings.
Preserve an accountable decision trail
Keep backup ID, review/version, storage location, encryption version, recovery-material owner, tester, destination, integrity result, errors, cleanup and approval.
Stop and investigate when
- Backup creation is the only test ever performed.
- One unavailable person holds the only secret.
- Restore testing overwrites the active review workspace.
State what the control does not prove
Does not replace provider permissions, guaranteed backup, password recovery or enterprise identity management. Validate manager assignment, provider permissions, plaintext copies, retention and recovery separately.
Performance review security questions
Will resetting my Folder Lock password recover every prior archive?
Do not assume that. Test version-specific recovery before relying on it.
When should HR run a restore test?
Before critical review deadlines and after material software, device or workflow changes.
